SUMMER CAMP

Our Club has been organizing Summer Camp for Children who are above the age group of 14 years. The Idea of Starting the camp came up in the year 1997-98 when Rtn. PP. Sharath Choudary was the President. The purpose was to give the School Children an opportunity to develop skills which they do not get to know at school. It was felt that we should start in an area which has children from Lower Income Group. Upon going through various options we thought a Govt. School would be a better place to start as basic infrastructure would be available and also the atmosphere of teaching is well understood. School teachers would be of help as few teachers would have this skill or could at least help us to identify the teaching staff. Subjects of interest were deliberated and we concluded that we should go in for   1. Sewing,   2. Painting,   3. Embroidery,   4. Knitting. Indoor Games and Library facility were also provided. It was decided to run the camp for maximum 4 weeks.

1. SEWING:- The strength of the Class was fixed to 30 students with One Main Tutor and one Assistant. The Teachers were instructed to give children one hour Theory and then make them draw some design in note book. Allow them to stick Buttons, Hooks etc on Cloth. Draw design on paper and cut the paper before they really touch the cloth. Sewing Machine working starts only after few days and time slot is planned for the children. Four Sewing Machines are provided from the Club. Cloth is Provided free to the children. Necessary tools are provided and Maintenance is taken care of  by us. A nominal fees of Rs. 25/- (Rupees Twenty Five only) now  revised to Rs.30/- (Rupees Thirty only) is charged.
2. PAINTING:- The Strength of the class is fixed to 30 students. One painting teacher who himself is a Commercial painter has been appointed. Note Books, Pencils, Erasers, Painting Box, Brush Etc. is provided free of cost to all the children. Initially the children are given One hour teaching in the class room. Basics of painting is then taught for the next few days and then they are taught  hand sketching and finally painting. A nominal fees of Rs. 25/- (Rupees Twenty Five only) now  revised to Rs.30/- (Rupees Thirty only) is charged.
3. EMBROIDERY:- The Strength again is fixed to 30 Students. Needles, Rings, Thread etc. as required is provided free of cost. One Main Teacher and an Assistant Teacher is provided. It also starts with drawings to be done on paper first and then slowly on clothing. A nominal fees of Rs. 25/- (Rupees Twenty Five only-) now  revised to Rs.30/- (Rupees Thirty only) is charged.
4. KNITTING:- The Strength again is fixed to 30 Students. Plastic Mats, Needles, Thread etc. as required is provided free of cost. One Main Teacher and an Assistant Teacher is provided. It also starts with drawings to be done on paper first and then slowly on Matt/Needles. A nominal fees of Rs. 25/- (Rupees Twenty Five only) now  revised to Rs.30/- (Rupees Thirty only) is charged.

Indoor Games like Carrom Board, Snakes and Ladder, Word Game etc. and Library Facility was provided in first few classes but were later withdrawn. Interest was lacking  in the children, though it was a free recreational facility. Free Biscuits packets were provided on daily basis. But later the same was withdrawn as they were being misused.

As a trial we had conducted Computer Training Facility and English Speaking Course but later had to with draw. Electricity was the constraint for Computers. The students showed low interest in English Speaking Course.

A Sweeper is provided to clean the place daily and also to provide Drinking Water to the students.

An overall In charge of the Camp who is called as CAMP CO-ORDINATOR is appointed who looks after the safe and smooth functioning of the camp. He collects fees and the necessary material which is required for the various cources is purchased by him. Proper account is maintained.

After four weeks of completion of Camp a Closing Ceremony is held. One of the participant would share his experience and also helps us to take corrective actions against the errors committed by us. It is nothing less than an Awards Night. Well dressed up participants come with their parents. All children display their work done during the term. Students who excelled are given a special recognition. Participation certificates are given to all the children and teachers. Few Dances are performed by children to entertain our Rotarian friends who attend the function. All the teachers are appropriately paid.

The camp was Conducted at Kabsons Zilla Parishad School, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad for about 5 years. Later this was shifted to Government Zills Parishad School, Bhagat Singh Nagar.

The camp is being been conducted successfully for last 12 years except for a break of one year. 

There is a small diversion in the selection process for Sewing Classes now, uneducated Adult Women is also enrolled. They are allowed only if children do not enroll.

1. Cherma’s Export Unit at Medchal Employs them if they show our Certificate and it should have Rotary Name. Thanks to Chermas.

2. One Tutor has got a teaching Job in Saudi. She had only Rotary Certificate to prove her skill.
